I had engaged in active debate on several of these AIDS conspiracy pages , but became disillusioned with their rhetoric, and their total incapability to inform me what was affecting my patients if not HIV , nor how those who access treatment survive, and those who dont die. Many of the “HIV dissidents ” I feel are a product of the US healthcare system which has left them antagonised towards physicians . I decided to focus on treating my real life patients

Scientists are unsure why HIV infection sometimes occurs despite using condoms. While some can be blamed on tears taking place before or during intercourse, others on leakage afterwards, (slipping off etc), it is also possible that people don’t always use them every time even if they say they do!

Life is not that simple. It all depends on what you mean by generalised. We have seen extensive spread among heterosexuals in Russia for example – accelerated by other epidemics among injecting drug users. There may be special factors in Africa. There have been recent reports suggesting that there may be some genetic susceptability in some populations. There is still much we do not know about HIV and how it spreads in different populations but good news is spread globally is slowing down.

Oh dear we are back on conspiracy theories again! Some people also think man never walked on the moon, that tobacco does not cause cancer and there that the earth is really getting cooller. There is much we do not understand about HIV and AIDS – as in most areas of medicine. eg 40 years on we have poor understanding of long term consequences of hormone replacement in women, or how nicotine damages the body. Thank you sir, for solid information. We are seeing a rash of “HIV denialists” here (I am an ER physician in the US). We do what we can to help people understand what the science of the matter is, but some are *ahem* resistant to logic.
We have a quite good HIV clinic here in town where any HIV+ can go for treatment regardless of means to pay. We view the money spent there as a community defense against the disease.
